Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure whether you need to be a registered builder?
Understanding whether you need to be registered as a Domestic Builder – Structural Landscaping can be confusing, especially as the requirements depend on the type of work you carry out.

Do I need a builder’s licence to carry out landscaping work?
It depends on the type of work you plan to do.
If you only intend to carry out non-structural landscaping work, such as paving, turfing, irrigation, garden beds and planting, a builder’s licence is not required, as this work is not considered domestic building work.
When is a builder’s licence required for landscaping?
If you want to carry out structural landscaping work, including decks, pergolas, retaining walls, pool houses or similar structures, you will likely need to be registered as a Domestic Builder – Structural Landscaping.
This type of work often requires a building permit, which means it is classified as domestic building work.
What experience do I need to apply for structural landscaping registration?
If you have previously worked (either as a contractor or employee) for a registered domestic builder, carrying out structural landscaping work such as retaining walls over one metre, decks or pergolas, you may already have the required experience and evidence to support an application.
In this case, you are encouraged to speak with the education provider, who can review your experience in detail and advise on your eligibility.

Is this training mandatory for all landscapers?

Why is registration important for structural landscaping?
Registration ensures you are legally permitted to carry out structural work that requires a building permit and helps protect both you and your clients by meeting regulatory requirements.
